Cue of the Week: “Jungle Dwellers”

In this week’s selection, stone and wooden percussion instruments – and a few other oddities – join together in a slowly-thickening minimalist rhythm. (The “jungle” atmosphere may resonate with those of you currently drenched in summer humidity.)

Cue of the Week: “The List”

This week’s cue is an alternately intimate and sweeping orchestral piece featuring strings, oboe, and piano. This was recorded back in the days when you needed a stack of DA-88 recorders in order to track an orchestra digitally. (Today you just need a reasonably fast hard drive!)

Cue of the Week: “Aftermath”

I wrote this somber prelude for piano, strings, and clarinet for the opening of the film Home Room, which deals with the psychological effects of school violence. In this scene, detective Van Zandt (played by Victor Garber) surveys the sad aftermath of a school shooting.

Michael scores iOS games “Wizard Ops” and “Strange Rain”

Wizard Ops

Michael is writing music for Phkyen Media’s forthcoming iOS game Wizard Ops, as well as the critically-acclaimed Strange Rain title from Opertoon.

Wizard Ops is a traditional running/shooter series title featuring a team of stylized wizards running a gauntlet of Renaissance-esque opponents. Michael’s music combines orchestral fantasy scoring with modernistic touches and an undercurrent of humor.

Opertoon’s top-selling iOS app (#1 on U.S. iPad entertainment charts) Strange Rain is an immersive experience featuring music against a changing backdrop of stormy weather and a nonlinear narrative story. Michael’s piano score, to be offered as an expansion to the app, features an impressionistic accompaniment that, like the visuals, slowly becomes “stranger” over time.

Cue of the Week: “Gideon’s Ride”

This week I’m breaking from my usual stream of music for films, video games, and the like. Today’s selection is an instrumental excerpt from Gideon and the Blundersnorp, a concert piece for orchestra and narrator. As you might guess from the title, this is a fantasy story aimed at younger audiences. In performance, the music and story interweave in a way that’s reminiscent of Peter and the Wolf.

There’s no narration in this excerpt, but the music will give you a sense of the tale’s quasi-medieval storybook setting.

Cue of the Week: “The Last Highway”

This week’s selection combines contemporary drums and guitar, orchestral strings, and the ubiquitous french horn section. The overall flavor is a mix of heroism with a touch of modernistic moodiness.
