Cue of the Week: “The Lowlanders”

This week’s selection intermixes lots of drums with cimbalom, mandolin, and recorder. (An alternate name for this piece might be “massacre at the Renaissance fair”.)

Cue of the Week: “Sudden Blooms”

This week’s selection is a bit of mid-tempo electronica-plus-acoustic-guitar-plus-vibraphone (yes, that old cliche) written for Culture, an XBox Live game.

“Super Sidekick: The Musical” wins accolades at NY Fringe Festival

Super Sidekick: The Musical, with book by Gregory Crafts and music and lyrics by Michael Gordon Shapiro, has earned a number of accolades and positive reviews at the 2012 New York Fringe Festival. Some honors include a Critic’s Pick designation by New York Magazine, and a glowing review from NYTheatre.com .

The music was also one a small number of shows to be granted a one-month extension in the Fringe Encores series, and was the only children’s show to do so in the festival’s history.

Super Sidekick: The Musical will be included in the fall 2012 catalog from stage publisher Samuel French.

Cue of the Week: “Wizard Flight”

This blog has been offline for a few weeks, but I have an excuse: I was over in New York attending a fabulous NY Fringe run of Super Sidekick: The Musical, for which I wrote music and lyrics. It did so well that the Fringe extended its run throughout September. If you’re in the NYC area, check it out!

Onto our usual subject matter. This week’s selection is from the iOS game Wizard Ops, wherein the protagonist does what wizards traditionally do, namely don a jetpack. Of course, wizardly flying music was called for. Enjoy!

Cue of the Week: “Jay’s Theme”

This small slice of acoustic/folk pop heralded a sympathetic character’s arrival in the film “Siren”. Unlike an actual pop song, it doesn’t so much as end as ease out – a common technique to let the score exit gracefully without the audience becoming too aware of the change. Guitars courtesy of the ever-talented Tom Strahle.

Cue of the Week: “At Rest”

When writing this dramatic cue, I was seized with the notion of using a choir of flutes instead of the more traditional string accompaniment. The effect is both colder and more intimate, which seems perfectly appropriate for a scene about acceptance of death, set in a morgue.

In addition to the standard C flute, you’ll hear alto and bass flutes in the mix as well. Piano remains in the foreground throughout, reinforced by cello and a glassy electronic pedal.
