The film
She Wants My Baby is my second film collaboration with director Matthew Toronto for Lifetime Movie Networks. In this tense thriller, a new mom starts to suspect that her young and beautiful nanny is trying to steal her life. Suspicious coincidences start to mount, personal relationships strain, and a sinister plot slowly emerges.
The score
Thrillers demand from their scores a certain kind of tense energy, but there’s always plenty of room for variety in the details. Since this story centers around the well-being of a baby, I incorporated some of the musical sounds of early childhood: bells, harp, high register piano, and the like.
The central themes are often presented on bass flute, which is one of my favorite orchestral instruments. The bass flute retains the soft and lush sound of its more familiar cousin, but can also carry a dark and sinister quality. This seemed like the perfect way to musically convey the story’s insidious threat, which guised itself as gentle comfort. (You might notice that I’m bending over backwards to avoid spoilers here.)
