Cue of the Week: “The Murky Swamp”

This week’s selection from Wizard Ops Tactics portrays the game’s swamp level as a damp and ominous place. Plaintive woodwind harmonies ease in and out over low string undulations, while excerpts of the game’s main theme recur in the brass. And to show you how lazy I am: the low string lines themselves are just the main theme, slowed down and set to 7/8 time.

Cue of the Week: “The Army Assembles”

Continuing the music progression from Wizard Ops Tactics, this week’s cue accompanies the game’s Army Builder sequence with an anticipatory mood and almost-obligatory snare drum rhythms. A martial melody recurs throughout the piece, starting with the low strings, then subsequently in horns, violas, and low woodwinds.

Cue of the Week: “Beach Battle!”

This music selection from Wizard Ops Tactics takes on a distinctly pirate-y tone, as befits a game setting with beach umbrellas, cannons, and a giant frigate.

Cue of the Week: “Weapons Shop”

This short and impish piece of music is from the game Wizard Ops, and plays when you negotiate with a surly shopkeeper to buy an assortment of high tech sorcerous armaments. This “album cut” features a distinct ending, whereas in-game music is often truncated in order to be able to loop indefinitely.

Cue of the Week: “The Evil Blimp”

The game Wizard Ops for iOS and Android was just updated with some brand-new content, so I thought I’d share some of the new music. This selection is your textbook boss music. (For non-gamers, this means the intense fight music that accompanies extra-tough challenges at the end of a game level). In this case, the boss is a warlike dirigible that keeps pelting me with fatal bombs. I have yet to get past this level, and it’s becoming a bit embarrassing.
